Human Becoming

The original concept of this phrase and of our T-shirt “Human Becoming” is based on a message my father, Bishop Robert Hooks spoke. The message was based on the reality that there is One ultimate Being (God) while we are constantly becoming like Him. Which was His plan from the very beginning according to Genesis 1:26. A reality we most often forget. The lie is that being like Him is impossible. I had the privilege to meet the wonderful Pastor Doug Stringer at Awaken the Dawn a few years ago. He gave me an unforgettable prophetic word. He said “God is bringing you to a place of true Holiness and consecration”. When I heard it I remember thinking “is that even possible?”. Holiness seemed like an unattainable, ungraspable goal. Not because I wasn’t saved, and not because I didn’t love God. Simply because my life had already went past the point of no return. I was already tainted. My life being violated and the choices I had made in my past, I felt like there was no coming back from it. I am ecstatic to be wrong! I remember years ago talking with my brother in love Pastor Jonathan Chano about Paul and the thorn in his flesh. Discouraged from my own humanity, I began to express how I could relate to Paul’s situation. He told me something that changed my whole life and concept about Grace. He said the Grace God gave Paul in that moment was not for him to stay that way, but to overcome it. Throughout Scripture we see all these great opportunities where God’s magnificence meets our humanity. He comes to us at the well (John 4:1-30), and at the cross (Luke 23:40-43). Calling us to become that which we were created to be. “Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, according to our likeness....” Genesis‬ ‭1:26‬ ‭CSB‬‬. Him being Holy, set apart, means that it is absolutely attainable. When reconciled through Christ it actually becomes reality. Holiness is not a result of our actions. Our actions become a result of holiness. They become the fruit of the seeds that we plant in our spirit. The Grace was never to magically do anything. It is for us to receive and overcome. If you are having a difficult time in your “becoming” take heart! Hebrews 4:14-16 tells us “Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens — Jesus the Son of God — let us hold fast to our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in every way as we are, yet without sin. Therefore, let us approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in time of need.”

‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭4:14-16‬ ‭CSB‬‬. Do not withhold yourself from His throne. This is the process of becoming. It is not out of reach. If you fall get back up. Scripture says “When he falls, he will not be hurled headlong, Because the LORD is the One who holds his hand.” Psalms‬ ‭37:24‬ ‭NASB‬‬. Meaning he will not lose his mind. He is the holder of our hand. Draw near to Him who loves you. He only wants the best and like I’ve said before, you cannot follow God and fail!
